The Eastbourne Bowling Club has been part of the community since 1907, operating from its current Muritai Road site since 1913. Over its 116-year history, the Club has achieved competitive success and supported generations of Eastbourne residents in their passion for bowls.
However, in recent years, membership and financial constraints have made it challenging for the Club to remain at its current site. Eastbourne Bowling Club is now considering selling and relocating.
A Community-Led Proposal
To continue offering bowls in Eastbourne for its 137 active members, the Club has developed a proposal to relocate to HW Shortt Recreation Ground. The proposal includes:
Redeveloping one of the three existing tennis courts into a synthetic bowling green, and
Replacing the basketball court with a new 3v3 basketball play area, encouraging broader community use of the space
This proposal has been developed and led by Eastbourne Bowling Club, and is supported in principle subject to community engagement by the Eastbourne Community Board and the Eastbourne Sports and Services Club.
Council’s Role
Hutt City Council is not running or leading this project. We are supporting the community consultation process by:
Hosting this consultation on our Have Your Say platform, and
Helping to promote the consultation so the right people can have their voices heard.
Please view the plans to understand what is being proposed on the HW Shortt Site.
Have Your Say
We want to hear your thoughts on this community-led proposal. Whether you support it, have concerns, or questions – your feedback is welcome and valued. It will be utilised to develop an anonymised report back to the bowling club so it can determine how much support there is from the community for the proposal.
Consultation is open from Monday 18 August - Monday 8 September
