Hutt City Council and its partners are leading a once-in-a-generation transformation of Te Awa Kairangi ki Tai Lower Hutt’s city centre. This work will improve flood protection, enhance transport options, and bring new life to the city centre.
This work means there are some big changescoming to our city centre streets, and how we connect withour awa (river).
We have the opportunity to make our city centre safer, easier to navigate and more enjoyable for everyone who works, shops or lives here.
Riverside Park and Car Park
We’re also seeking feedback on our proposed plans for a Riverside Park and Car Park which will support inner-city living and workingby providing space to pause, play and spend time in nature.
We received useful feedback for our Riverside Park during our engagement for the City Centre Framework and Street Upgrades. We’vealso talked to interest groups (such as event organisers and active modes groups) and needs-based groups(such as rangatahi,disabled people, etc) to inform the early planning for the park.
Feedback so far has helped create an early concept plan showing what these spaces could look like and the types of activities and features that could be included.

Once we’ve heard from the community,we’ll analyse all feedback.
We’ll report back on what you said and what changes we have (or haven’t) made to our plans as a result of your feedback. We’llshare back the refined concept plans once ready.
Proposed plans for both our city centre street upgrades and the Riverside Park and Car Park will then go to Council for approval later in 2026, before detailed designs are produced.
We’ll continue to share updates as these projects progress.
